Horseshoe Kidney This MRI image (coronal post-gadolinium, 3D-GRE image, maximum intensity projection) depicts a horseshoe kidney. A horseshoe kidney is a congenital anomaly. In this condition, the kidneys are fused together in early embryonic life. The term “horseshoe kidney” is derived from the appearance of the fused kidneys. Complications of horseshoe kidney include ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, recurrent infections, and an increased risk of trauma because of its position anterior to the spine.
